September 27, 2013

Buying a new homes comes with some great perks like builder warranties and 10 year warranties, lower utility costs, as well as brand new everything. The money you save with a lower cost of ownership will help with some of the purchases you might want to make when you move into your new home. Here's a list of 4 items to think about putting money toward when you purchase a new home. 1. Lawn Care EquipmentIf you're moving from an apartment, you'll want to make sure you have a lawn mower, garden hoses, sprinklers, etc. to keep that brand new sod and new trees looking beautiful. 2. Blinds or Window Treatments - It's not something you really think about, but you will want window coverings of some kind when you move into your home. A builder doesn't usually include this, but you have a lot of options at different price points to choose from. You can have custom blind companies come in and measure and cut to exactly fit your windows, or you can go to Lowes or Home Depot and find the closest sizes and have them cut. Sometimes though these are a lot longer and will give you stacks of louvers on your window sill versus custom blinds. 3. Appliances - Often, a refrigerator and a washer and dryer aren't included in your appliance package. This is usually something you buy and install after closing. 4. Custom Closets - A great addition to any home is a more customized closet. If you want to go that extra mile and make room for every belt, tie, blouse and skirt, it may be worth your while to invest in custom closets after you purchase your home. While not all of these are necessities, a few are nice to have and do after you purchase your home but before you move in. So when you are putting together your budget for purchasing a new home, keep some of these expenses in mind.
