History
Guthrie holds a unique place in Oklahoma’s story. Born almost overnight during the Land Run of 1889, Guthrie transformed from a makeshift tent city into the bustling territorial capital, complete with brick buildings, electric streetcars, and a grand Victorian skyline. It became the first state capital when Oklahoma joined the Union in 1907, and though the capital later moved to Oklahoma City, Guthrie retained its architectural beauty and rich historical legacy.
Today, downtown Guthrie is a living museum, with the largest contiguous Historic Preservation District in the country. Stroll through its red-brick streets and you’ll find more than 2,000 buildings on the National Register of Historic Places, including the iconic Guthrie Scottish Rite Temple and the State Capital Publishing Museum.
