Design ideas and tips for refreshing your master bedroom

Create Your Retreat

A master bedroom is more than a room with a large bed. This space is a retreat—a place where you can escape from the activity of the household, enjoy peace and quiet, and even take control of the remote for a change. Does your master suite give you that sense of privacy and relaxation? If not, it’s time to rethink your master bedroom décor. Here are some simple ideas and tips to spark bedroom inspiration for a well-deserved makeover.

Remove Everything with Color

Start with a blank canvas. Everything that hints at the color you’ve had will simply distract you from making a change. Take down the window treatments and wall décor, and pull off the bedding. Toss the pillows into another place for safe-keeping. Roll up the area rug. All that should remain is your furniture (unless it’s colorful).

Change the Color Scheme

Go from neutral to coastal or vibrant, or the other way around. Experiment with your master bedroom colors. If you don’t want to make a big change, consider turning one wall into an accent wall, with a complementary color or a wallpaper to enhance the room. Ask yourself, “What calms me? What inspires me?” These are the themes that should underscore your master bedroom paint colors and decor.

Rethink Furniture Placement

At Ideal Homes, we design our master bedroom suites to allow for flexible furniture layout, like more than one place to situate your bed. Consider how you move through the room, what you need at your bedside, and where to place occasional pieces. Where does the light stream in during different times of the day? What do you want to see first thing in the morning and the last thing at night?

Create a Nook

To be a true escape, you need a sitting area. Whether you simply place a comfy chair and a table or create a room within your room depends on the space you can make available for this important function. Picture yourself reading a book, listening to music, browsing through family mementos, or sneaking away with just your thoughts to keep you company.

Change your Lighting

You’d be amazed at what you can do with light fixtures! Wall sconces add soft light where you want it, replacing the bedside table lamp that takes up space. A chandelier can add the final touch to your new décor. Replace all of your light switches with dimmers so you can adjust the light to your mood.

Open your Mind to New Doors

The door is often overlooked when redecorating. Your master bedroom design can get a dramatic change by switching your bathroom or closet doors (or both). The sliding barn door has become a popular trend. It’s easy to install, and the door can look as sleek or rustic as you’d like.
