Plaza District - Fun, Hip and Happening

March 6, 2019

A neighborhood once deteriorated and considered somewhat dangerous to visit, the Plaza District has evolved over the past 10 or 15 years into a popular hub for those looking for what’s fun, hip and happening. Located on N.W. 16th Street between Classen and Penn, the Plaza District is currently home to locally-owned shops, quirky galleries, trendy restaurants, neighborhood bars and creative businesses. Hairstylists, tattoo artists, graphic designers and others all office in this area now. Named after the Plaza Theatre, which was built in 1935 to show Hollywood releases and was a long-time staple of the neighborhood, this district is now the location of the nationally renowned Lyric on the Plaza Theatre. Today, live performances are shown at this location in season. Regarded by many as Oklahoma’s premier professional theatre company, the Lyric Theatre, which uses the Civic Center as another venue for some of its performances, also offers classes in dance and theatre at its Plaza District location. A number of the Plaza District retail shops offer unusual one-of-a-kind items, along with a unique atmosphere. DNA Galleries is an artist-made store and urban contemporary art gallery. Euphoria OKC is a CBD store that features local art in its shop. Bad Granny’s Bazaar offers unique, curious collectibles, retro and vintage clothing, kitschy gifts, furnishings, jewelry, art, as well as recycled, repurposed, nearly new and gently used items. A studio and gallery that specializes in multi-media Future Dada design, Bomb Shelter features works in wide format print, silk screen, canvas, and sculptural installations, which rotate on a monthly basis. Dig It! Boutique sells retro 70s/80s/90s apparel, lowbrow/indie art and accessories, locally screen-printed tees, counter culture books, music and more. Distinctive food and drink is also available in this district. Goro Ramen and Izakaya is open late and serves up a fun take on noodles, Japanese inspired street food, and drinks. The Press offers comfort food of the deep south combined with that of the southwest, filtered through an Oklahoma approach. New York-style pizza is available either by the slice or as whole pies, along with the largest canned beer selection in the state at the Empire Slice House. Pie Junkie offers pies made with fresh and seasonal ingredients either by the slice or as whole pies, which can be enjoyed onsite or carried out. The District House is a full expresso bar with baked goods, hot deli sandwiches, wine and beer. A monthly block party called Live on the Plaza is held the second Friday of every month from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. There’s live music, featured artists, special events and local shopping. Whether during one of its block parties or on a regular day—or night—of the week, Oklahoma City’s Plaza District is the place to visit for             fun and funky shopping, dining or drinking experience.
