5 Tips for Using Your HVAC System to Reduce Allergens in Your New Home

REDUCE ALLERGENS IN YOUR NEW HOME

Struggling with spring allergies in Oklahoma? Here are 5 expert HVAC tips to reduce allergens and keep your home’s air clean.

In Oklahoma, there is a small pause between cold winters and scorching summers. This phenomenon is called spring, and you’ll know it’s here because you start sneezing and then you do not stop sneezing. The good news is that your HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) system plays a big role in reducing allergens in your home via Ideal’s Fresh Air Ventilation System, which is one of the best new home systems available to bring in filtered air.

For many Oklahoma homeowners, spring pollen, dust, and seasonal allergies make indoor air quality a major concern. To learn more about this, we met up with one of Ideal Homes & Neighborhood’s trade partners, Jonathan Jackson with A-1 Electric Heat & Air.

A-1 installs the HVAC systems in many new Ideal homes, and according to Jonathan, there are five tips for keeping allergens out of your home and keeping your HVAC system in tip-top shape.

Q: How often should I change my air filter in my new home?

A: Every month

Most air filter packaging says to change air filters every 90 days, but if you read the fine print they say up to 90 days. And 90 days is often too long. Jonathan recommends changing filters in your home once a month for the best allergen protection, especially if you have children or pets.

If you need a reminder, Jonathan recommends checking the filter monthly when your electricity bill arrives in your mailbox or inbox.

How do I know my air filter is ready to be changed?

You’re looking for a lint-like buildup on the air filter. If you’re not sure, simply hold it up to the light. If you see little or no light coming through, your air filter needs to be replaced. Also, if your air filter is a different color from when you installed it, it is definitely time to change it.

There are also other clues around your house that signal your air filter is due for a change. If you notice less air or heat coming through your vents, it’s probably time. And if you can see a buildup of dust at your registers or grilles, it means that the air filter is no longer collecting dust, and you need to change it.

While changing your air filter every 30 days is best, there are certain times when it is absolutely essential.  First, if you are in a new home. You need to change your air filter once a month for the first year to filter out nearby construction dust. Second, during high-use times like summer and winter, the HVAC unit is running more often and filtering more air, and so the air filter’s life is going to be shorter.

Q: What filters should I use for the best allergy prevention?

A: Use standard, pleated MERV air filters. Not upgraded allergy filters.

While filtering out extra allergens with a fancy allergy air filter sounds like a no-brainer, it’s not recommended for two reasons. First, standard air filters will filter out most allergens on their own without the need to spend extra money on thicker filters. And second, the extra filtration layers of those filters put additional stress on your HVAC’s blower motor as they are more restrictive.

Basically, the system has to work harder to push the air through the filter, which can cause your blower motor to prematurely wear out. In this case, more expensive filters don’t mean better filtration.

Q: How can I improve air quality with my HVAC system?

A: Healthy air and a healthy HVAC unit go hand in hand

Just like the extra layers of an allergy air filter cause stress on your HVAC blower motor, so does a dirty filter. Anything extra that impedes the air traveling through the air filter forces the motor to work harder.

Jonathan explained that when your air conditioner is running with a dirty filter in the summer, the air doesn’t maintain the proper “latent-to-sensible ratio”, which means the system is working harder to remove humidity instead of cooling the air efficiently. This will cause longer run times. While the system will remove more humidity from the home (one of the important functions of your HVAC system), it’s not actually cooling it. And the motor is under stress and getting hot, which also causes more stress on the motor.

It’s a lose-lose-lose situation that can be completely remedied simply by changing your air filters regularly.

Q: Besides changing filters, how else can I reduce allergens in my new home?

A: Use Your HVAC Fan to Reduce Indoor Allergens

After your home has been sealed up during Oklahoma’s hot summers and cold winters, there is nothing quite as wonderful as opening all the windows and airing out your house. But then comes the pollen ruining all your plans.

By setting your HVAC system’s fan to “on” for an hour or two, you can circulate fresh air through your house that passes through the air filter.
