Grandmillennial style … not your grandmother’s chintz

Grandmillennial Style

February 14, 2022

If you’re into traditional interiors, this trend will make your heart happy. The term “grandmillennial” has been around for a couple of years now, but it’s not a new trend or style, just a new word that defines the old and established. The younger generation of millennials (late 20’s to late 30’s) has jumped on the bandwagon, giving traditional an innovative look of nostalgia.

Based on traditional style, grandmillennial may start with some tried and true styles and pieces but definitely kicks it up a few notches with updated colors and fabrics and a more modern design aesthetic. Think monograms, fancy drapes, fringe trim, sterling silver … granny chic. It’s just a nod to old-school design. A look back at the best of traditional design, giving it a fresh new twist. More timeless than antiquated.

Here are some ideas considered key to Grandmillennial style:

  • Brown wood furniture: cherry, mahogany, walnut
  • Patterned and floral wallpaper
  • Mixed fabric patterns
  • Skirted tables
  • Ruffles, pleats, bows, and fringe embellishments
  • Abstract art
  • Metallic accents
  • Toile, chintz, plaid
  • Monograms
  • Elegant chandeliers
  • Collections
  • Wicker, rattan, and bamboo
  • Needlepoint
  • Blue and white
  • Vintage brass
  • Patterned throw pillows
  • Botanicals
  • Marble
  • Sterling silver
  • Fine china

Surrounding ourselves with things we love is key to this style. It’s a nod to the past that brings in the comfort and traditions of the homes we loved growing up. No matter your style, most people can appreciate the classic and traditional décor styles that most of us grew up with.

The style consists of all things feminine, beautiful, and timeless. Breathing new life into old things. And thriving off the thrill of secondhand hunting!

And according to interior design bloggers, this style is here to stay. Young people have discovered history. The idea of creating a collected, layered room that tells a story will always be in style. The emotional connection created with Grandmillennial style, or granny-chic, gives off the familiarity, fun, and comfort in our homes. And who doesn’t long for that?

So maybe ruffled chintz isn’t your ideal cup of tea, but that pleated bedskirt mixed with your favorite floral wallpaper could just make your home feel ideal.
