Essential Guthrie - Then & Now

Essential Guthrie, OK Then & Now

September 23, 2022

Ideal Homes & Neighborhoods will soon open new homes in Guthrie!

The Mission Hills neighborhood in historic Guthrie already has Ideal Homes from previous builds, but the company has new land under development nearby and plans to open a new section of homes in early 2023. Mission Hills backs up to a beautiful creek with trees to capture a quiet, peaceful feeling of home.

Ideal owners in Mission Hills will be near historic Guthrie and less than 30 minutes from all areas of Oklahoma City. Oklahoma’s first capital, Guthrie is a charming historical city, with amazing turn-of-the-century architecture. First established in 1887, on April 22, 1889, the Land Run brought tens of thousands of settlers thundering over the prairie on horses, in wagons, and foot. More than 10,000 claims were staked that day in the land next to Cottonwood Creek.

In 1907, Guthrie became Oklahoma’s state capital, a designation that was not to last. Oklahoma City business leaders soon launched a vigorous campaign to make Oklahoma City the new state capital. A special election was held in 1910 to determine the state’s capital location, with Oklahoma City winning the vote. The state seal and the capital were relocated to Oklahoma City, where it has remained since.

Local civic leaders have worked for more than 30 years to ensure the preservation of Guthrie’s rich architectural legacy. A portion of the downtown district is designated as a national historic landmark, in one of the largest historic districts on the National Register. This designation signifies the national importance of downtown architecture and its rich history.
